Plugs or Caps
Bulkheads are used either for a temporary period,
to pressure test a pipeline for acceptance, or as a dead end of
a pipeline, which may be permanent or extended in the future. The
most common bulkhead designs are dished and flat plate type, which
can be supplied for either temporary or permanent installations.
The flat plate or concrete type is the most commonly
used permanent bulkhead to seal the end of a pipeline. This bulkhead
requires external bracing in the form of either a concrete thrust
block or a beam type bracing. The jointing assembly generally consists
of a standard spigot and bell ring.
The dished bulkhead is recommended for site conditions
were an external bracing system is impractical. This mechanically
restrained bulkhead type is part of an internal system, that relies
on the frictional drag forces developed between the pipe and the
backfill material due to unbalanced forces in the pipeline. The
jointing assembly commonly consists of a clamp-type harnessed joint.
Flat plate type bulkheads may also be designed in combination with
mechanical restrained.
